How to Choose a Tennis Ball Machine: 11 Things to Compare

Want our shortlist? See Best Tennis Ball Machines of 2026: 6 Models Compared.

This tennis ball machine buying guide walks through the 11 specs that matter most when you compare machines. For each one, we show the range across the six machines in our Best Tennis Ball Machines comparison: the SPINSHOT Lite, Pro, Player and Plus-2 High-Speed, and the PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro. All values are as listed by the makers. Where a maker doesn’t list a value, we say so.

1. Ball capacity

The hopper size sets how long you can hit before you stop to collect balls.

  • SPINSHOT Lite: just over 40 balls
  • SPINSHOT Pro, Player and Plus-2 High-Speed: 120 balls
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: 150 balls

2. Speed range

Top speed matters for advanced players; the lowest speed matters for beginners and for touch drills.

  • SPINSHOT Lite: up to 37 mph (SPINSHOT doesn’t list a minimum)
  • SPINSHOT Pro: 18–68 mph
  • SPINSHOT Player and Plus-2 High-Speed: up to 80 mph, down to 18 mph
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: 15–80 mph (25–130 km/h)

3. Spin

Spin lets you practice against the kind of balls you see in a match.

  • SPINSHOT Lite: top spin
  • SPINSHOT Pro: adjustable top spin, back spin or flat shots
  • SPINSHOT Player and Plus-2 High-Speed: topspin and backspin
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: topspin, underspin or no spin, up to 60 rps, with a 1.5 s spin switch

4. Oscillation and ball placement

Oscillation moves the feed so balls don’t all land in one spot. Horizontal oscillation spreads balls across the court; vertical oscillation changes the height of the feed.

  • SPINSHOT Lite: horizontal, across the full width of the court
  • SPINSHOT Pro: oscillation on (full width of the court) or off, plus a trajectory you adjust electronically from the front panel
  • SPINSHOT Player and Plus-2 High-Speed: horizontal and vertical; the Plus-2 High-Speed adds quick-start oscillation modes on the control panel
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: PONGBOT lists 6 placement positions and full-court coverage

5. Feed interval

The feed interval is the time between balls. A short interval suits fast rallies; a long one gives you time to recover.

  • SPINSHOT Lite and Pro: 2–10 seconds
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: 1.5–12 seconds
  • SPINSHOT Player and Plus-2 High-Speed: not listed

6. Power and battery runtime

A battery lets you play on any court; mains power suits a court with an outlet.

  • SPINSHOT Lite, Pro and Player: 2–3 hours of play per charge
  • SPINSHOT Plus-2 High-Speed: battery included for US delivery; runtime not listed
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: 7800 mAh battery, up to 8 hours

Mains options: SPINSHOT sells an optional AC power module for the Lite, a mains power upgrade or hybrid power / battery options for the Pro, and an optional Mains Power Module for the Player. The Plus-2 High-Speed runs on battery or mains power, with an optional Hybrid Power and Battery module.

7. Weight and portability

You will carry the machine to the court and back, so check the weight and size.

Machine Weight Size
SPINSHOT Lite 22 lb (battery); 19 lb (AC) 16 × 10 × 10 in
SPINSHOT Pro 49 lb (battery); 41 lb (AC) 20 × 18 × 12 in
SPINSHOT Player 41 lb without battery 20 × 18 × 12 in
SPINSHOT Plus-2 High-Speed Not listed Not listed
PONGBOT Pace S / Pace S Pro 22 kg (about 49 lb) See note

SPINSHOT lists size as height × length × width. PONGBOT lists the Pace models at 700 × 370 × 560 mm (about 27.6 × 14.6 × 22.0 in).

8. Controls

Dials are simple; an app adds programmable drills; a remote lets you start and stop from the baseline.

  • SPINSHOT Lite: speed dial, feed dial and oscillation switch
  • SPINSHOT Pro: dials and switches
  • SPINSHOT Player and Plus-2 High-Speed: touch panel and the Drill Maker app
  • PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro: remote and Bluetooth app

All four SPINSHOT machines work with SPINSHOT’s optional Remote Watch. On the Pro, SPINSHOT says it only starts and stops the ball feed.

9. Drills

Preset and custom drills change speed, spin and placement for you during a session.

  • PONGBOT Pace S: 396 preset drills
  • PONGBOT Pace S Pro: 564+ preset drills, plus four smart modes that PONGBOT says are not available on the Pace S: Recovery Trigger, Adaptive Rally, Match Challenge and Arena of Dash
  • SPINSHOT Player: 12 pre-programmed and 12 custom drills
  • SPINSHOT Plus-2 High-Speed: 12 custom drills
  • SPINSHOT Lite and Pro: no drills listed

10. Warranty and returns

Check how long the warranty runs and whether it covers your use.

  • SPINSHOT (all four machines): 2 years for personal use, 1 year for commercial or club use. Returns: a return request within 30 days of delivery, with a 10% restocking fee; the buyer pays return shipping if the return is the buyer’s choice.
  • PONGBOT: We haven’t covered PONGBOT’s warranty terms here; check the PONGBOT store before buying.

11. Price tier

Prices change often, so we group machines by price tier instead of showing prices.

  • $: SPINSHOT Lite
  • $$: SPINSHOT Pro, PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro
  • $$$: SPINSHOT Player and Plus-2 High-Speed

Which machine fits you

How we researched

This guide is research-based. We did not test these machines ourselves. Every value comes from the makers’ own product pages: SPINSHOT product pages and store data for the Lite, Pro, Player and Plus-2 High-Speed (read on September 30 and October 1, 2026), and PONGBOT product pages for the Pace S and Pace S Pro (read on September 30, 2026).

FAQ

How heavy is a tennis ball machine?

Among the machines in this guide, SPINSHOT lists 22 lb for the Lite with its battery and 49 lb for the Pro battery model, and 41 lb for the Player without its battery. PONGBOT lists 22 kg (about 49 lb) for the Pace S and Pace S Pro. SPINSHOT doesn’t list a weight for the Plus-2 High-Speed.

Can a tennis ball machine run on mains power?

Some can. SPINSHOT offers an optional AC power module for the Lite, a mains power upgrade or hybrid options for the Pro, and an optional Mains Power Module for the Player; the Plus-2 High-Speed runs on battery or mains power, with an optional hybrid module. For the PONGBOT Pace S and Pace S Pro, the specs we used list a 7800 mAh battery (up to 8 hours) and no separate mains option.

What does oscillation do on a ball machine?

It moves where the balls go. Horizontal oscillation sends balls across the width of the court, so you move side to side; vertical oscillation changes the height of the feed. The SPINSHOT Lite oscillates horizontally, the Pro has full-width oscillation you can switch on or off, and the Player and Plus-2 High-Speed oscillate horizontally and vertically. PONGBOT lists 6 placement positions for the Pace models.

What warranty do tennis ball machines come with?

It depends on the maker. SPINSHOT lists 2 years for personal use and 1 year for commercial or club use on the Lite, Pro, Player and Plus-2 High-Speed. We haven’t covered PONGBOT’s warranty terms here; check the PONGBOT store before buying.
